Sustainability in a Jar: C'mon Betty Thrives with Ann Arbor Green Business Challenge

In the heart of Ann Arbor, Caitlin Burr's artisanal canning company C'mon Betty exemplifies how local businesses can turn environmental challenges into delicious opportunities. Founded in January 2024, C'mon Betty creates unique condiments from locally sourced produce that would otherwise go to waste due to cosmetic imperfections or surplus.
The Ann Arbor Green Business Challenge (A2 GBC), a partnership between Ann Arbor's Office of Sustainability and Innovations and Ann Arbor SPARK, provides a framework for businesses like C'mon Betty to showcase their dedication to environmental responsibility while earning recognition and support.
"I wouldn't have probably started this business anywhere else," Burr reflects. "The resources and networks that exist in Ann Arbor have been absolutely invaluable because everybody is about building you up."
C'mon Betty's mission addresses a startling statistic: 40% of food grown is never eaten. Burr's innovative approach transforms "rescued" produce into shelf-stable products like zucchini relish and watermelon rind relish, utilizing glass jars and recyclable labels to minimize waste throughout production.
The Green Business Challenge has connected Burr with potential funding networks and sustainability experts who are helping her navigate certification requirements. The initiative offers "tools, guidance, and recognition for businesses ready to step up their green game."
As part of Ann Arbor's Sustainable Food Business Coalition, C'mon Betty also benefits from collaboration with like-minded entrepreneurs working toward sustainability throughout the food system. This network has helped Burr develop innovative solutions that earn extra points in the A2 GBC's certification rubric.
"The Fresh Coast folks have been amazing," says Burr, referring to the climate experts who assisted with her business canvas and product pricing. Their flexible approach helps unique businesses like C'mon Betty, which operates from both a home base and commercial kitchen, meet sustainability goals.
With the support of the Ann Arbor Green Business Challenge, C'mon Betty is poised to turn sustainable practices into business success: Preserving not just local produce, but a greener future in Ann Arbor.
